A Tale of Racism and Self-Destruction in the Deep South

BookSurge proudly announces the publication of Nothing but the Blood, by Ruth Gunter Mitchell

OXFORD, ALABAMA - BookSurge proudly announces the release of Nothing but the Blood, by Ruth Gunter Mitchell.

Probably most people could point to at least one individual in their lives who appears to be hurtling towards a bleak end, seemingly locked in a self-chosen fast lane, on the proverbial "Highway to Hell." The doomed individual may be destroying his or her mind and body with excessive alcohol or drugs, or courting disfigurement or even death with dangerous sexual practices, or making enemies right and left through abusive behavior and the mistreatment of others. Some individuals manage to combine all of these elements of self-destruction -- usually with predictable results. Unfortunately, not only do they bring their own miserable lives to scary ends, but they usually manage to make life difficult if not nightmarish for those around them.

In Nothing but the Blood, Ruth Gunter Mitchell's first book, we meet one such individual, known as Aunt Inny. The tale is told from her perspective and that of two other women who play major roles in the story. Her life begins in 1913, when she is born into a typical landowning family in Calhoun County, Alabama. She grows up in that area, but not in the sense of maturing emotionally or spiritually. As a young woman, she begins leading a wanton and negative life, awash in drug abuse, promiscuity, bitter racism, unrelenting selfishness, and other shameless behavior. In essence, she is a terribly misguided human, grappling with demons on all sides, and lashing out at the world -- even manipulating those whom she should love, and actively trying to offend others. While not ignorant, she misuses her intelligence to try to control her victims, and fails to see that she is ultimately her own most abused victim.

This story is hard-hitting, and at times disturbing. It reveals much about the evil protagonist, but at the same time informs readers of any similar people in their own lives, and helps us all to better understand what dark forces may be pushing them forward, as they move inexorably towards a bitter end, while at the same time dragging others down as well. Nothing but the Blood paints an unforgiving and unforgettable portrait of a human loose cannon, rolling downhill, and eventually plunging into a black sea -- in this case, a climactic end which reveals the ultimate significance of the book's title.
